Best Changing Tables and Pads of 2019

Best Changing Tables and Pads of 2019

Let’s face it, changing diapers is not going to be your fave baby-and-me activity. But having whatever it takes to make you and your baby most comfortable for swapping nappies (up to 10 times a day!) makes it easier to deal with the whole process.

Do you need a changing table?

You don’t necessarily need a changing table. In fact, some parents just use the changing pad that comes with their diaper bag to freshen up their little ones on their bed, couch or floor. Other parents use their portable playards (like the Graco Pack ‘n Play that comes with a changer), or repurpose a dresser into a changing table by adding a changing pad on top.

But, it can be helpful to have a changing table with raised guardrails, handy storage spaces and all at a comfortable bending height. You can purchase a changing table to match your crib or nursery style, or get one that has drawers or shelves to use long after your baby has outgrown diapers.

When do you need a changing table or pad?

Well, the whole diaper changing thing happens pretty much instantly. So, you’ll need to be ready from the get go. You can continue to use a changing table until your child reaches 32 inches in height—the standard length of a changing pad—which will likely occur around the first birthday.

WHY WE LOVE IT

The Gulliver is easy on the wallet and easy on the back since you can change your baby with minimal bending over. Use the two shelves for stacking essentials on their own or in baskets.

KEEP IN MIND

If you’d rather have a changing table that you can use as a nightstand or small dresser when your wee one is past diapers, try the IKEA Sundvik ($149) instead. Still an affordable option, the top changing table folds up to create a secretary desk silhouette.

WHAT BABYLIST PARENTS SAY

“The IKEA Gulliver is a great price and super sturdy!” -Krista R.

Sleek Storage

Babyletto Hudson Changing Dresser - $379.98
WHY WE LOVE IT

This mod number is perfect for parents who want a streamlined changing table that doubles as a dresser. With three drawers, a storage cabinet and table-top cubbies, there’s plenty of space for extra diapers, onesies, PJs and wipes. For another streamlined option, albeit with slightly less storage space, you can also check out the Babyletto Modo dresser changing table. Both come with raised sides to keep your little one safe, but can be removed when you only want to use it as a dresser.

KEEP IN MIND

Since the standard size changing pad doesn’t fit this dresser, it’s easiest to purchase the Babyletto one ($39; 31 inches long). Also, some parents report that the dresser cracks and chips easily, especially during a somewhat complicated assembly. Be extra careful when putting it together!

WHAT BABYLIST PARENTS SAY

“We wanted a changing table that could be as functional and space saving as possible and the Babyletto Hudson is! The dresser has three horizontal drawers, perfect for holding baby’s clothes and sheets, while a vertical shelf space is great for holding diapers.” -Lauren R.

Heirloom Look

DaVinci Jenny Lind Changing Table - $103.99
WHY WE LOVE IT

We can’t help but fall for the intricate spindles on the Jenny Lind that harken back to bygone eras. If you’re into the vintage vibe, this piece is a definite must! Open shelves are ready for baby booty supplies and the changing table comes with a thin, waterproof changing pad.

KEEP IN MIND

Some parents report that the changing table scratches easily when baskets are placed on the shelves.

Choosing what’s right for you

Whether you choose to go all out with a changing-table dresser combo or just make do with a blanket or a mat to use for changing sessions on the floor, it makes little difference to your wee one as long as it’s a safe spot. Choose what you think will work best for you and your family, and remember that making your baby clean and comfy is really what matters most.
