DIY Bliss: Four Ways to Upcycle a Baby Changing Table

Do you have a baby changing table that you no longer need? We never had a traditional baby changing table for our kids because we repurposed a sidecabinet that we had and added a small portable diaper changing station to it. But if you are like many parents in the United States, you likely have a standard changing table that might look something like this:

Totally bland and uninspiring as is, right? But as a landing spot for changing diapers, it doesn’t really have to be pretty or fancy. In a few short years, however, you no longer need that changing table. You could sell it, donate it, or throw it away… or you could repurpose it. The latter is much more fun, you’re giving yourself “new” furniture, and you’re saving one more item from the trash!

Upcycled Baby Changing Table to Bar Cart

Changing tables already have good bones and are usually made to be fairly sturdy — they have to hold a squirmy baby, after all — making them great candidates to be used as multipurpose furniture. A few months ago, I upcycled my friends’ old baby changing table and made a bar cart – much more functional for our lives now that our kids are older.

Then, using the “new” cart, I have styled it three additional ways to give you some inspiration as to how you might be able to use it in your own home!

Upcycled Baby Changing Table to Gardening Cart

Outdoor furniture is SO expensive. It drives me crazy how expensive it is. You can easily transform your new upcycled cart into a gardening cart and add additional storage for your gardening supplies, as well as give you a potting shelf.

TIP: if you are going to use this cart outdoors, I would seal the paint with an outdoor sealant to ensure the painted wood endures the elements.

Upcycled Baby Changing Table to Arts & Crafts Cart

I have a ton of arts and craft supplies. A ton. Washi tape, paint, glitter, bakers twine, treat bags, decorative straws, fabric, cardstock, adhesives, vinyl, Mod Podge of all kinds — you name it, I likely have a lot of it. You too?

Then your “new” upcycled baby changing table would be perfect to hold all of your arts and craft supplies. Just add some decorative storage compartments to hold the smaller items and you’re set! The structure of the cart makes it really easy to see all of your supplies.

Upcycled Baby Changing Table to Book Cart

We go to the public library at least once a week, so to make it easy to always find our books (and try to avoid those pesky overdue fines), it’s great to have one place where you can place library books, as well as bookmarks, pencils, notebooks, and even add an S-hook to hold your library book bag.

Easy DIY Upcycle Facelift: Washi Tape

Washi tape is one of my favorite ways to transform almost any piece of furniture these days. You can see that I used a silver striped washi tape for the bar cart, and flowery, colorful washi tape for the gardening cart. I love it because it comes in almost every color and pattern imaginable, and it is temporary and easy to remove without leaving any marks on furniture.
